FInally a decent Xbox Live app on the iPhone!

xbla-iphone-appIf you’re a gamer who wants to stay connected to your Xbox LIVE account even while on the go, guess what: there’s an app for that. The 360 Live (warning: iTunes link) application is an iPhone app that lets you perform many of the same social and gamertag management functions as you would be able to on the console itself.

Recently updated to version 2, the $1.99 app allows you to manage friends and friend requests, see who’s currently online, compare gamerscores and achievements, and chat over Xbox LIVE messaging to one or more recipients. After logging in with your XBLA credentials, the app will automatically pull down all your friends and other needed account information.

There may, however, be a bit of a caveat emptor required regarding the 360 Live app. As PC World points out, Microsoft stated back in August of last year that apps connecting to Xbox LIVE should be free of charge to end users. Of course, they have to go through Apple to make an appeal regarding particular apps, so it’s hard to say what status this $2 app is actually in: if you’re hesitating on shelling out the 2 bucks, you may be better off waiting to see if it becomes free. Some sources are also skeptical about handing over Xbox LIVE credentials to third-party developers.

Still, version 2 of the app looks to be accumulating positive reviews in the App Store (App Store

) as one of the better Xbox LIVE apps out there. If you give it a spin, be sure to let us know your impressions; we’ll keep our eyes peeled for a price drop or an official statement regarding the app from Microsoft.

Orange announces UK iPhone deal

iPhone
The handset has boosted sales for 02

Orange has reached an agreement to sell Apple's popular iPhone in the UK.

The deal ends an exclusive arrangement between UK network operate O2 and the Californian phone maker, which has been in place since 2007.

Orange said its customers would be able to buy the phone "later this year" but did not specify a date or pricing.

Orange now offers the popular handset - of which more than 25 million have been sold worldwide - in 28 countries and territories.

"Pricing will be key," said Dave McQueen, principle analyst at Informa Telecoms and Media.

Orange recently revealed plans to merge its UK network with Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile to create a business with 28.4 million customers.

If given the go-ahead, it would be the UK's largest provider, overtaking Telefonica's O2, with about 37% of the mobile market.

O2 have offered the phone in the UK since its launch in 2007. In February, it said it had sold more than one million of the handsets.

The launch of the latest iPhone 3GS in June significantly boosted sales, with many stores running out of stock.

The phone has also allowed the firm to win subscribers from other networks, according to analysts.

O2 will continue to sell the handset in Britain, alongside iPhone rival the Palm Pre.

The Palm phone, described by some as an "iPhone killer", will be available exclusively to O2 from the 16 October.
